jrsmith17 Dope collection of audio sketches. Favorite track: Dawn (first ever Neotokyo sketch).

bromousacid Such a cool insight into how some of these tracks evolved from ideas and made it into different full-fledged songs in various ways. Favorite track: Origami (original version).

James Wallis Martin Ed Harrison has developed his own style of musical offshoot of Drum 'n Bass (I call Drum 'n Jazz) and I fell in love with his 2009 release of NeoTokyo. I was so stoked to find there were cuts that never made it on the album but now suddenly available. If you love NeoTokyo, the Appendix is an essential must have. Favorite track: crzsht (abandoned sketch).

about

Experience some of the journey of exploration and discovery, searching for the Neotokyo sound.

When I started working on Neotokyo, I was fresh out of school, inexperienced in audio and production, and learning new software. I had previously composed solely in the midi format, without any process for mixing or mastering. I had never explored sampling, synthesis or the sounds of electronic music in general, so this project was my chance to fuse together my influences, learn a ton of new skills, and hopefully discover a sound that would be distinctive, memorable and unmistakably 'Neotokyo'.

I am very grateful to the talented people I worked on Neotokyo with. We shared excitement for common interests, and also shared excitement for each others work. It was a warm and supportive team to be a part of, and a time that has rippled through my life ever since, opening doors in the video game industry and connecting me with many more talented creators.

Many of the sketches here were abandoned for good reason (though there might be a track or two that could have held up), so this is less about delivering cool new tracks to listen to, and more about giving you a peek behind the scenes, a glimpse at what I was producing while fumbling around, searching not only for a sound, but for a process through which I could tap into the heart of the game's setting, and have an emotional impact on the listener.

Thanks for being a part of my journey.
